Army Sergeant Caryn E. Nouv of Newport News, Va., was assigned to 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., during Operation Eduring Freedom. Sgt. Nouv was killed on July 27, 2013 in Ghanzi Province, Afghanistan of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire. She was 29 years old. Nouv, a Specialist, was posthumously promoted toe Sergeant.

SGT Nouv grew up in Yorktown and graduated from Tabb High School in 2002 where she was in the marching band and flag Corp. She joined the Army in 2009 and was trained as a signal support systems specialist. During her first combat deployment in Afghanistan, she worked as a convoy escort driver. The 359th Transportation Company had a dangerous job, often taking other soldiers outside the safety of the base. Like thousands of young men and women, SGT Nouv sought purpose and stability for herself and her family in life through the Army. She seemed to be finding her way when her life was tragically cut short.

SGT Nouv’s daughter and son are recipients of a Folds of Honor Scholarship.
